Dayet Srij, the Merzouga lake
Dayet Srij is a lake that appears near the Merzouga dunes after the rains. When it has water, waterbirds arrive and, some winters, flamingos. When it doesn’t, it’s a dry plain.
When it has water
It’s a seasonal lake: it fills with the winter and spring rains and dries up in the heat. Some years it lasts for months, and some years it barely appears. That’s why we never promise it: we’ll tell you what it’s like before you go.
Merzouga flamingos and other birds
When there’s water, Dayet Srij attracts birds you wouldn’t expect in the desert: grey herons, storks, waterbirds and, sometimes, flamingos, especially in winter. If you’re into birdwatching, we can arrange an outing depending on the season and conditions.
How to visit
Dayet Srij is included in the full-day 4x4 excursion around Merzouga, along with the nomad families, Khamlia and the Mfis mines.
Frequently asked questions
