How to choose your Sahara desert tour in Morocco

  1. Start with the departure city

    Marrakech and Fes are the most common: Marrakech is about 560 kilometres from Merzouga, on the other side of the High Atlas, and Fes about 470, across the Middle Atlas. From Errachidia, which has an airport, the desert is about two hours away.

  2. Then, the number of days

    The minimum is 3: in 2 they would be days of up to 12 hours in the car. With 3 days the journey is spread out and there’s time to see Ait Ben Haddou and the Todra Gorge. With 4 or more you get a full day in Merzouga to explore the desert by 4x4. And if you have a week or more, the tours from Casablanca and Tangier combine the imperial cities, Chefchaouen and the desert.

  3. Finally, where it ends

    Many tours don’t return to their starting point: they leave from Marrakech and finish in Fes, or the other way round, so you don’t have to retrace your steps.

What’s the best tour to see the desert?

If you’re leaving from Marrakech, the 3-day tour to Merzouga: it paces the journey best. From Fes, the 3-day tour. If you want to see more of Morocco, the 3- or 4-day tour from Marrakech to Fes via the desert.

Merzouga or Zagora?

Merzouga has the big dunes of Erg Chebbi; Zagora is closer to Marrakech, but its dunes are much smaller. Our tours go to Merzouga, and one of them also passes through Zagora and Erg Chigaga.
