Merzouga jeep tour: a 4x4 desert excursion

A Merzouga jeep tour takes you by 4x4 beyond the Erg Chebbi dunes: nomad families, the Gnawa village of Khamlia, the Mfis mines and, if it has rained, the lake of Dayet Srij. Private, with a local driver and no camels.

What you will see

  • Tea with a nomad family in their tent
  • Gnawa music in Khamlia
  • The old mines of Mfis
  • The black desert and its fossils
  • The lake of Dayet Srij, when it has water
  • Views over Erg Chebbi from up high

The Merzouga 4x4 tour route

We leave Merzouga on the tracks that circle Erg Chebbi. The first stop is with a nomad family, who live in tents as they always have and invite us in for tea. Then on to Khamlia, the village of the Gnawa musicians, whose music came from sub-Saharan Africa with the caravans.

Next come the abandoned mines of Mfis, where lead was once extracted, and the black desert, a plain of dark stone full of fossils. We head back skirting the dunes, stopping at the viewpoints and at the oasis of Hassi Labied.

Dayet Srij, the lake that appears with the rain

Dayet Srij is a seasonal lake that only holds water after the winter and spring rains. When it does, waterbirds arrive and, sometimes, flamingos. When it’s dry, we drive across its basin. We can’t promise it: it depends on the year.

Half day or full day

A half day, about 3 or 4 hours, gives you time for the nomads, Khamlia and the dunes. The full day adds Mfis, the black desert and Dayet Srij, with no rush and a stop for lunch.

A desert tour without camels

If you’d rather not ride a camel, this excursion doesn’t need one. And if you’re sleeping in the desert, we can also do the transfer to the camp by 4x4. It’s the option for families with young children, older travellers, or anyone who simply doesn’t want to climb onto a dromedary.

What to bring and when to go

Even though you sit in the 4x4, at every stop you get out and walk on sand and stone. Bring closed shoes, sunglasses, a scarf in case the wind picks up, sunscreen and water. In winter, a warm layer: mornings and evenings are cool.

In summer, the best time to set off is early in the morning, before the heat builds. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons, and winter is when Dayet Srij is most likely to have water.

Combining the 4x4 with other activities

The half-day excursion leaves your afternoon free. The most popular plan is the 4x4 in the morning and the quad, the buggy or the camel ride on the dunes at the end of the day.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Merzouga 4x4 tour?

A half day, 3 to 4 hours, or a full day to see the whole route.

Will we see flamingos at Dayet Srij?

Only if the lake has water, which depends on the winter and spring rains. We can’t guarantee it.

Can I do a Merzouga desert tour without camels?

Yes. The whole excursion is by 4x4, and if you sleep in the desert the transfer to the camp can be by 4x4 too.

Can I combine it with a quad or buggy ride?

Yes. Tell us what you’d like to do and we’ll arrange it on the same day.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. It’s the most relaxed activity: you sit in the 4x4 and we stop as often as you need.

What should I bring on a Merzouga 4x4 tour?

Closed shoes, sunglasses, a scarf against the sand, sunscreen and water. In winter, a warm layer for the morning and evening.

Do you pick us up from our accommodation?

Yes, from hotels, riads and camps in and around Merzouga. We confirm the time and meeting point before the activity.
