Four quad bikes with helmets parked on the Merzouga dunes

Activity in Merzouga

Quad biking Merzouga’s Erg Chebbi dunes

Quad biking in Merzouga is the most direct way to feel the sheer scale of Erg Chebbi: up and down the dunes with a local guide, right from the edge of the sand, for 1 to 3 hours.

What you will see

  • The Erg Chebbi dunes from the inside
  • Photo stops on the crests
  • Sunset or first thing in the morning
  • A route adapted to your level

What the ride is like

We start with a briefing on how to handle the quad and a short loop on flat ground. Then the guide leads the way into the dunes: climbs, descents and stops on top to take in the sea of sand. The route adapts to the group, so it’s just as much fun for someone who has never ridden a quad as for those who want more speed.

The best time is late afternoon: the sand turns red and it’s cooler. In summer we also go out first thing in the morning.

Always with a guide

Quad rides go out with a local guide, for safety: the dunes shift with the wind and you need to know them. If you’d like to ride without a guide, ask us: it depends on the vehicle and availability, and we can’t promise it.

Merzouga quad, buggy or 4x4?

The quad is for one rider (or with a passenger) and is the most physical. The buggy seats two side by side, with a steering wheel and a roll cage. The 4x4 is for exploring the surroundings without driving. Many travellers combine the 4x4 in the morning with the quad at sunset.

Meeting point

We meet in Hassi Labied, right on the edge of Erg Chebbi. From Merzouga and Hassi Labied it’s only a few minutes away; if you’re staying further out, tell us when you book.

Before you set off

The guide explains the throttle, the brakes and how to shift your body weight on climbs and descents. You practise on flat ground until the quad responds the way you expect.

Into the erg

We start on the small dunes at the edge. Once the group feels comfortable, the guide heads towards the big dunes, always where the sand allows on that particular day.

Stops

We stop on the dune tops to rest, drink some water and take photos. On afternoon rides, the last stop coincides with the sunset.

Back to base

We return to the starting point along the edge of the dunes. How long it all takes depends on the option you choose, from 1 to 3 hours.

Safety on the dunes

From a distance the dunes look smooth, but up close they have sudden drops and steep faces that change with every wind. That’s why the guide always rides in front and decides where to go. Follow the guide’s line, don’t overtake and keep your distance from the quad ahead. If you want to stop or slow down, raise your hand or tell the guide at the next stop.

Helmet and goggles are included. And if there’s anything we should know — an injury, a fear of speed, little experience — tell us beforehand: the route can be adapted.

What to wear for quad biking in Merzouga

  • Closed shoes rather than sandals
  • Long trousers and comfortable clothes that can get sandy
  • Sunglasses
  • A scarf or neck gaiter against sand and dust
  • Sunscreen
  • Water, especially on rides longer than an hour
  • In winter, a jacket for the ride back at sunset

When to go: time of day and season

At sunset and first thing in the morning the light is better and the sand is cooler. In summer, riding at midday isn’t a good idea: the heat on the dunes is intense, so we suggest those two time slots. In spring and autumn the weather is good almost all day. In winter the afternoons are pleasant, but as soon as the sun goes down it gets cold.
